Is a Vizsla right for me?
Temperament
Vizslas are "soft" dogs that respond best to positive reinforcements. They can be misunderstood by some as aggressive due to their friendly and cuddly nature. They operate best in a structured household where boundaries are enforced early and often. Exercise is a pre-requisite to a calm and obedient Vizsla. They need exercise both mentally and physically everyday. They are exceptional dogs for people who like to spent a lot of time running, hiking, mountain biking and any other outdoor activities. Vizslas tend to stay close to their owners even while outside. They are likely to veer off but almost always return every few minutes to make sure their owner hasn't left them. This is why some call them velcro dogs; they do not like to get far from their owners.
Vizslas are not a great dog for people who want a lazy/cuddly dog but do not have a yard or open space to help their dog get rid of pent up energy. Vizslas are open to training and enjoying learning new things. They are always up for a game but can sometimes be fearful if they are introduced to new situations in the wrong way. They need to be socialized and given small and positive interactions in order to grow into a confident and powerful dog.
Vizslas are very loyal to those that they consider their leaders. They will meet you at the door or fence everyday when you get home as if they have not seen you weeks. They are always open to a cuddle and cannot get close enough, even if they are on your lap. They can be taught to have boundaries but everyone in the family must be on the same page or these boundaries will be mowed over.
